KJ and I found Henk’s web site a few years ago and contacted him about a small bronze. Unfortunately back then the only form of payment he accepted was a bank wire transfer and for small items the cost of the transfer makes the transaction undo-able from our perspective.  The great news is that Henk is now accepting PayPal which makes transaction seamless and easy.

So we knew this would really open up Henk’s business in the US and so we asked his permission to post some of the photos of his works and he agreed.  We have purchased five of his bronzes to be used in our suiseki displays and we are very pleased with the quality of his work and therefore highly recommend him and his art work.

You can find Henk’s work at this location.

Henk Fresen - Crane

This is one of our favorites. By the time we made a decision to purchase one at the show in Japan they were long gone!

He adds color with acids and a gas burner. We really like this as we believe it adds character to the piece. Henk wrote that “This patina gives them a beauty of its own and is far more difficult then painting. It took me some years to master this technique on such small items. And the colors are much more beautiful in reality then in the photo’s.”

These are small in stature but excellent in detail. We purchased two of these – just in case Henk decided he wasn’t going to make them anymore – and each one is just a bit different. We appreciate the slight differences and believe you will as well.

So let’s take a closer look at some of the details of this piece.

The time and attention to detail is what attracted us to his work.  Rather than just making a bronze cast which is then highly repeatable for making duplicates, Henk takes his time and adds that extra step of coloring each piece – we appreciate this.

Notice the attention to detail down the tree trunk. This is what gives life to Henk’s artwork.  We can see lichen even growing on the tree.  How cool would this be to add this piece to a suiseki display to add a bit of realism?

The detail again is superb. Make sure to click the above image to see a larger version. Then pay particular attention to the wings of the dragonfly.

This is one of Henk’s latest editions – a small mouse. It is 5cm from nose to the tip of the tale and retails for € 250 or roughly $325.
