Our friend David Sampson has a number of wonderful suiseki and we highly recommend that you visit his site. A number of years ago we noticed on his site that he has this marvelous Chinese Wax stone whose stand was made by a Mr. Chung of Hong Kong. I don’t believe the stone is being displayed on his site anymore but we ask David to let us know if he obtained another one. So today, we want to share one that he shared with us.
A Yellow Wax Stone From China
In Japanese suiseki terms this is a sugata-ishi or figure stone. This stone is quite beautiful. Normally the Japanese tend to have dark black sugata-ishi stones and I’m not sure I have seen one in this color range from Japan. This stone is rich in color and texture. It is a classic figure stone and is lovely in form. Do you think it is female or male?
We tend to think of it as a female figure with this color and pattern.
This is a photo of the back of the stone. Excellent in color, texture and shape. We believe the stand adds greatly to this stone.
This stand in the Chinese Southern style was carved from a single piece of wood. I think you would agree his craftsmanship is superb and the stands adds to the display of the stone rather than taking away from it which we believe the sugata-ishi stands often do.
We thank David for sharing this stone and photos with us. It is a highly valued piece of art.
