Peter Tea was kind of enough to give me copies of the some 500 photographs that he took on his trip to Kokufu-ten this year and is gracious enough to allow us to post some of these photos for your enjoyment. Today, we will be showing you a few photos from Shinji Suzuki’s nursery in Obuse. Peter and the guys headed up there for a visit before Kokufu opened. It looks mighty cold as you will see in some later photos. This post will be in two parts and we will also post a catalog of photos to make it easier to reference them; that link will be shown in Post 2.
We want you to pay attention to all of these photos and notice how clean the benches are without a spot of weeds or leaves. According to those that have under gone an apprenticeship with him this is one of their daily chores – to clean up! We really appreciate the effort to see how well kept his garden, stands and greenhouses are maintained.
A very beautiful black pine. Look at the bark in this next photo; different tree than the one above.
So what do you think of this deadwood?
This reminds us of the freeway under and overpasses in Los Angeles, CA.
A fine juniper with very full foliage. I think in America sometimes we reduce the foliage a bit too much. Thoughts?
One thing for sure, if this tree wasn’t in the greenhouse it would be a significantly different color!
This level of cleanliness is something to strive for in our gardens. Of course it helps to have apprentices.
More in the next day or so…
